Maintenance and Aftercare For Tape in Hair Extensions

Tape in hair extensions are a popular choice for those looking to add length, volume or a fresh new style to their hair. These extensions can be worn in a variety of ways from hip-length mermaid waves to bouncy old money bobs. If you’re considering getting tape in hair extensions, it is important to understand what maintenance and aftercare procedures are necessary to keep them looking healthy, voluminous and beautiful for longer!

Your hair stylist will be able to guide you on the best maintenance and aftercare procedures for your tape in hair extensions, however it is ultimately your responsibility to make sure they are correctly cared for. This will ensure that your extensions last as long as possible and protect your natural hair.

It is important to avoid brushing your hair too often, this can cause matting and can shorten the lifespan of the adhesive bond which attaches the tapes to your hair. When you do brush your hair, use a wide-tooth comb and only brush the bottom of your hair avoiding the tapes. When you do wash your hair, be careful not to get conditioner on the tapes as this can cause them to loosen and slip out prematurely.

Using the correct hair products is also essential, when you have tape in hair extensions you should only ever use sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner that are designed specifically for extensions. Products containing alcohol, oil or sulphate can dry out your hair extensions making them more likely to slip and cause damage. Always avoid applying any products directly to the tapes as this can cause them to become loose and cause the adhesive to weaken over time.

After your hair has been washed it is important to allow the tapes to air dry rather than being blown or flat ironed. The hot heat can damage your hair extensions and cause them to break or slip out.

If you do need to blow dry your hair, we recommend that you use a low heat setting and be sure to apply a protective spray beforehand. Styling products such as serums or oils should never be applied to the tapes as this can damage them and cause them to become loose and slippery. When applying any hair products to your hair, always start at the mid lengths and work downwards to prevent them coming into contact with the tapes.

It is also important to attend all of your follow-up maintenance appointments for your tape in hair extensions, this will ensure that they are repositioned correctly, the adhesive on the tapes is replaced and your hair is thoroughly washed and blow dried before reapplication. Be sure to ask your stylist how they will be removing the tapes as some salons may choose to use an acetone based remover which can be damaging to your hair if not removed properly.

When you need to re-tape your tape in hair extensions, we recommend that you buy a pack of our Spare tape tabs, these are double sided and will stick to the same side as the original sticky tape tabs on your invisible tape extension weft. To re-tape your extensions simply spray the spare tab with remover, leaving it to soak in and loosen the adhesive for 20-30 seconds before gently peeling it away from the weft.
